Why a Career as a Personal Assistant Could Be the Change You’re Looking For

Stylized path winding upward toward a bright horizon in Lewis College brand colors, symbolizing career growth, personal development, and taking the first step into a new career.

Not everyone dislikes their job.

But a lot of people reach a point where something doesn’t feel quite right.

It might be a lack of progression, a role that feels repetitive, or simply the feeling that you’ve outgrown what you’re doing.

Or maybe you’re looking to get back into work now your kids are a bit older.

If that sounds familiar, a career as a Personal Assistant could be the change you’ve been looking for. I’ve seen it first-hand, both in my own career and with students I’ve supported at Lewis College.

One of the biggest fears when changing careers is thinking you need to start over completely.

In reality, many of the skills you already use are exactly what employers value in PA roles. If you’ve worked in customer service, retail, hospitality, or similar roles, you’ve likely developed:

  • Communication and working with different people
  • Organisation and time management
  • Problem-solving under pressure
  • Staying calm in busy situations

Often the missing piece isn’t your skills. It’s confidence in using them in a new context.

Another advantage of working as a PA is the variety it offers.

You can work in sectors that match your interests and goals, including healthcare, legal, finance, corporate businesses, education, and creative industries.

It’s not just a job title. It’s an opportunity to move into an environment that aligns with what you enjoy and where you want to grow.

Many people put off a career change because they feel they don’t have the time.

At Lewis College, our online courses are designed to fit around your life. You can study in short sessions around your workday, in the evenings, at weekends, or at your own pace.

That flexibility means you don’t have to step away from your current job to move forward. You can gain the skills and confidence for a new career while keeping life stable.

For many people, the hardest part of making a career change isn’t ability. It’s confidence. You might know you have the skills, but stepping into something new can feel uncertain. Over the years, supporting students and reflecting on my own career change, I’ve seen how a bit of guidance and structured learning can make a big difference.

At Lewis College, our Executive PA Diploma includes a dedicated personal development section, designed to help you build confidence, professional communication, and strong working relationships. This gives reassurance that you can apply your skills effectively in a new role.

    Changing careers doesn’t happen overnight.

It often starts with something small. Learning a new skill. Exploring a new path. Taking a step in a new direction.

A career as a Personal Assistant offers a practical, realistic route into something new. It builds on the experience you already have while opening doors to opportunities across a wide range of sectors.

I’m here at Lewis College to support you along the way, just like I did for my own career change and for the students who’ve taken their first steps into PA roles.

Sometimes, that first step is all it takes to start a journey you never thought was possible.
