About Lewis Secretarial and Computer College

We have a remarkable history of success - our students’ success for over 25 years!

We have been teaching local students in Devon and Cornwall for many years, but over 5 years ago we have developed our courses to make them available for students to study at home - giving them a very flexible method of learning - but without losing the individual touch.

The College was founded in 1983 by Penny Lewis Cert Ed - having previously worked as a Legal PA at Partnership level in Kent, London and Devon, before going into teaching - having its first College in the heart of Torquay, Devon.

Originally, Lewis College has its own Employment Agency - specialising in secretarial and hotel positions for several years.

In 1991 the College and Employment Agency were destroyed in one of the biggest fires in Torbay for 30 years - but with determination the staff and pupils were set up in accommodation within the week - following high level publicity for help - and the launch of Challenge Penny.  New premises were found, completely refurbished and new equipment from paper clips upwards were installed within 7 days and in time for students to sit their exams the following week.

The College is now based in a lovely village setting within Torbay - situated in the well known Ilsham valley leading down to the sea.

The teaching team is led by Penny Lewis - who is very hands on and who likes to monitor personally the progress of every student whilst studying at Lewis College.

We teach people individually, patiently and with a lot of understanding.

We teach all types of people - school leavers, returners, graduates and GAP year students as well as those looking to change their career and those who have been working for a while but with few or no qualifications.

Our students have received special recognition by the Pitman Qualifications and London Chamber of Commerce in the past with special presentations at the Houses of Parliament by the then Education Minister.

For those taking exams (OCR) most students gain a distinction, and we have a consistent 99% success pass rate.

Not only do students have the benefit of personal attention throughout, but also support and practical help in securing a job - locally, London or abroad.
