Overview

If you wish to specialise and work as a Legal Secretary, this course covers both the secretarial skills required plus a full range of different caseloads you would deal with in a typical legal office.

The course will enable you to choose which department you work in including Conveyancing, Probate, Civil Litigation, Criminal Litigation and Family Law.

The course is run by one of our tutors who worked for several years as a Legal Secretary at partnership level in London and Devon.

OCR Level 3 Certificate in Text Processing with Legal Options


OCR is a leading UK exam awarding body, committed to providing public qualifications at GCSE and A Level, as well as a wide range of vocational qualifications for those studying at College – either part time or full time.  They develop their qualifications in close consultation with teachers, industry leaders and government to ensure they are relevant for learners today and meet employers’ requirements.

OCR is part of the University of Cambridge which is Europe’s largest assessment board.  They play a leading role in developing and delivering exams/assessments across the world, operating in over 150 countries.

OCR Level 3 Certificate in Text Processing with Legal Options

Text Production

Developing your skills in producing different types of business documents requiring advanced English and proof reading skills

Speed Keying

Developing your touch typing skills and speed to over 55 wpm

Legal Word Processing

Learning how to create complex legal documents using stored phrases, completion statements, bills of costs etc

Legal Audio Transcription

Creating correspondence, legal documents and completing standard forms from dictated instructions

Legal Text Processing

Creating legal documents and completing typical legal forms

Legal Administration

General Legal Knowledge

Understanding the role of the Legal Secretary, learning how law is created (statute and case law), understanding the Court Structure, understanding the role of different personnel within legal work, learning about the different sources of legal advice and funding and understanding the different types of legal work

Conveyancing

Learning the step by step process in dealing with the sale or purchase of a property

Probate

Learning the step by step process in dealing with Wills and Probate matters

Civil Litigation

Learning the step by step process when dealing with a typical civil litigation case

Criminal Litigation

Learning the process of when someone is arrested and representation in Court

Family Law

Learning about the legal process concerning divorce, arrangements for children and financial support

Duration

You can study this course full-time, or part-time – studying the number of hours per week that suits you and fits in with your other commitments.

We recommend that you study at least 5 hours a week, which can be broken up into one hour study slots perhaps, or 2-3 hours on a Saturday and Sunday if you find that easier.

Some students wish to study as quickly as possible – and complete the course in as short a time as possible.

The choice is yours!

For your guidance, if you study regularly these hours per week, you should complete the course within:

5 hours per week on average  

12 months

10 hours per week on average

6 months

20 hours per week on average

3 months

Over 30 hours per week on average

10 weeks

 The maximum duration within which this course needs to be completed is 12 months.

The course is put on hold whilst you or the College are on holiday - enabling you to have holiday breaks whilst studying your course.
